Bali is compact, busy, and shaped by traffic rather than distance. Once you understand that travel time matters more than kilometres, getting around becomes far easier.

You’ll rely on private drivers, short rides, and occasional scooters rather than long-distance transport. Movement across the island is flexible, but rarely fast. Transport in Bali is informal, widely available, and generally affordable.

How transport works in Bali

Distances are relatively short, but traffic — especially in the south — can be slow and unpredictable. The system is built around flexibility rather than fixed schedules.

You’ll mostly use:

• Private drivers for day trips and transfers

• Ride-hailing apps for short urban journeys

• Scooter rentals for independent travel

• Hotel shuttles in some tourist areas

• Boats & ferries for nearby islands

• Limited public buses for budget routes

English is widely spoken in tourist areas. A few Indonesian words you might hear: jalan (road), macet (traffic), cepat (fast), pelan (slow).

Airport transfers in Bali

Public buses

Public transport is limited but improving.

• Very cheap (around IDR 3,500–7,000)

More useful for locals than visitors.

Boats & ferries (nearby islands)

Boats connect Bali with nearby islands.

Popular routes:

• Sanur → Nusa Lembongan / Nusa Penida

  • 30–45 min

  • IDR 150,000–300,000

• Padang Bai → Lombok / Gili Islands

  • Fast boat: 1.5–2.5 hours

  • Ferry (slower, cheaper): 4–5 hours

Weather and sea conditions can affect schedules — mornings are usually calmer.

• Kuta → Seminyak: 20–40 min

• Seminyak → Canggu: 30–60 min

• Canggu → Ubud: 1–2 hours

• Ubud → Uluwatu: 1.5–2.5 hours

Short distances can take longer than expected — always allow buffer time.

Taxis & private transport

• Metered taxis exist but are less common than apps

• Private drivers dominate most travel needs

• Hotel transfers are widely available

Agree on a fixed price (harga tetap) before starting if no meter is used.
