Getting Around Armenia

Armenia is compact, mountainous, and surprisingly easy to navigate once you understand how transport works. Distances are not large, but winding roads through valleys and high passes mean journeys can take longer than they look on a map.

Most travellers base themselves in Yerevan and take day trips or short overnight journeys to monasteries, mountain towns, and scenic regions. Transport is a mix of minibuses, shared taxis, trains, and private drivers.

How transport works in Armenia

Transport is simple but informal compared with Western Europe.

You’ll mostly use:

• Marshrutkas (shared minibuses) for regional travel

• Shared taxis for faster intercity trips

• Private drivers for monasteries and flexible itineraries

• Trains on a few limited routes

• Flights only for international travel

• Cross-border transport to Georgia

A few useful Armenian or Russian words you may hear:

• Marshrutka – minibus

• Avtokayan – bus station

• Taksi – taxi

• Toms – ticket

Schedules exist, but departures often run when vehicles fill up.

Airport transfers in Armenia

Zvartnots International Airport → Yerevan

Armenia’s main international airport sits about 12 km west of Yerevan.

Marshrutkas (minibuses)

Marshrutkas are the backbone of public transport in Armenia. They connect almost every town and village and depart from bus stations around Yerevan.

They’re inexpensive and frequent but can be crowded.

Typical routes:

• Yerevan → Dilijan
  ~1.5–2 hours | ~AMD 2,000

• Yerevan → Gyumri
  ~2 hours | ~AMD 2,500

• Yerevan → Goris
  5–6 hours | ~AMD 4,000–5,000

• Yerevan → Lake Sevan towns
  ~1 hour | ~AMD 1,500

Marshrutkas generally leave from Kilikia Bus Station or other local terminals.

Shared taxis

Shared taxis are one of the easiest ways to travel between cities. Drivers wait at bus stations and leave once four passengers are seated.

Advantages:

• Faster than marshrutkas

• Only slightly more expensive

• Flexible departure times

Typical shared taxi fares:

• Yerevan → Dilijan: ~AMD 4,000–5,000

• Yerevan → Gyumri: ~AMD 5,000–6,000

• Yerevan → Goris: ~AMD 8,000–10,000

If you pay for all seats, the car becomes a private transfer.

Trains in Armenia

Rail travel is limited but scenic.

Main routes include:

• Yerevan → Gyumri
  3–4 hours

• Yerevan → Vanadzor
  ~4 hours

Trains are slower than road transport but comfortable and inexpensive.

Monasteries & cultural sites

Many of Armenia’s most important attractions sit in remote valleys or mountain plateaus. Public transport often stops short of the final destination.

Popular sites include:

• Geghard Monastery

• Garni Temple

• Tatev Monastery

• Khor Virap

The easiest ways to visit are:

• Day tours from Yerevan

• Hiring a private driver for the day

• Combining marshrutka + taxi for the last section

Private drivers typically cost AMD 40,000–70,000 per day, depending on distance.

Lake Sevan & Dilijan National Park

One of Armenia’s most popular short trips is north-east of Yerevan.

Lake Sevan

• Marshrutka from Yerevan

• ~1 hour

The lakeside Sevanavank Monastery sits on a hill overlooking the water.

Dilijan National Park

Often called the “Armenian Switzerland”.

Access:

• Marshrutka Yerevan → Dilijan
  ~1.5–2 hours

Local taxis reach remote monasteries like Haghartsin Monastery.

Southern Armenia & Tatev

Southern Armenia is dramatic but remote.

Access usually involves:

• Yerevan → Goris marshrutka
  ~5–6 hours

From Goris you can reach Tatev Monastery, famous for the Wings of Tatev cable car — one of the longest reversible cable cars in the world.

Because distances are longer here, many travellers hire a driver or take organised tours.

Taxis & ride apps

Urban taxis are inexpensive.

Ride-hailing apps such as:

• Yandex Go

• GG Taxi

are widely used in Yerevan and other cities.

They offer clear pricing and avoid negotiation.

Cross-border transport to Georgia

Most international land travel from Armenia is to Georgia.

Common routes:

• Yerevan → Tbilisi
  5–6 hours by marshrutka or shared taxi

• Yerevan → Batumi
  8–9 hours

A daily train also runs between Yerevan and Tbilisi, including an overnight sleeper in summer.

Notes:

• Carry your passport

• Border crossings can take 30–90 minutes

• Transport usually waits while formalities are completed

Armenia rewards slow exploration rather than rushed itineraries. With Yerevan as a base and a mix of marshrutkas, shared taxis, and occasional private drivers, the country’s monasteries, mountains, and historic towns are surprisingly easy to reach.
